This is one of Wilde's most durable epigrams, and it traces cleanly to a specific primary source: it is spoken by the witty Lord Darlington in Act I of Lady Windermere's Fan, Wilde's first great stage success, which opened at London's St James's Theatre on 20 February 1892 and was published in 1893. The wording appears verbatim in the published text — "I can resist everything except temptation" — as Darlington's teasing reply to Lady Windermere, and it belongs to a run of paradoxical aphorisms Wilde gives the character rather than to any personal remark of his own. We found no serious rival claimant: the line is occasionally waved toward Mark Twain, Mae West, or W. C. Fields in casual lists, but none of those attributions rests on a documented source that predates or displaces Wilde's play.
