Experts can absolutely miss the mark sometimes—because the world has moved on from what they studied. Imagine your favorite teacher from high school. They were awesome, right? But if they haven't kept up with the latest teaching techniques, they might still be doing things the way they did 20 years ago. And while their methods worked great back then, they might not be as effective now.

This idea really came into focus during the tech boom of the late 20th century. Think about the early days of the internet. Back then, many so-called experts couldn't predict its explosive growth or the way it would revolutionize our lives. They were stuck in their old ways, thinking the world would stay the same. But the world didn't listen—it just kept evolving, and those experts were left scratching their heads.

Take Blockbuster, for example. At its peak in the early 2000s, it was THE place to rent movies. They had plenty of experts who thought they knew the business inside and out. But along came Netflix with its new-fangled idea of streaming movies online. Blockbuster's experts dismissed it. They were wrong because they were experts on the old way of doing things—brick-and-mortar stores, late fees, and physical DVDs. We all know how that turned out. Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy in 2010, while Netflix grew into a multi-billion dollar company. The experts at Blockbuster were simply out of touch with the new version of the world.

So, how can you apply this wisdom in your own life? Stay curious. Never stop learning. Don’t let your past knowledge trap you in outdated thinking. If you're in a fast-moving field—like tech, medicine, or even social media—make a point to read up on the latest trends and research. Attend workshops. Talk to younger folks who might have fresh perspectives. Essentially, don’t be the Blockbuster in a world full of Netflixes.

Think about Sarah, a mid-level manager at a tech firm. She’s been in the industry for 15 years and knows her stuff. But instead of resting on her laurels, she makes it a habit to read industry blogs, attend webinars, and network with recent graduates. One day, a young intern suggests using a new project management tool. Instead of brushing it off, Sarah gives it a look. She learns it's more efficient than what her team was using. They switch tools, productivity soars, and Sarah gets credit for being forward-thinking. Imagine if she'd ignored the intern? She’d still be stuck with their old, clunky system.

So, in a nutshell, staying relevant means staying curious and open to new ideas. Don’t let your past expertise become your future blind spot. The world doesn’t stop evolving, and neither should you. Keep that mindset, and you’ll be ready to roll with whatever changes come your way.
